Interview: Tahli Watts from Golden Grind

Have you seen café waitstaff serving funky coloured lattes and asked yourself, ‘What on earth is wrong with their milk today?’ Chances are the milk is perfectly fine (we hope) and instead what you’re witnessing is something golden. A Golden Latte to be exact. The Golden Latte – a tasty mix of turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and black pepper, is the latest trend to hit your drinks menu and we can’t encourage you enough to start ordering. The team behind The Golden Latte is Tahli and Renwick Watts, and Sage Greenwood. Together they started Golden Grind and have since caused waves in the world of hot beverages and frothed milk. To learn more about the brand we sat down with Tahli and talked everything from gut health to Kanye’s bling.

Tahli, Renwick and Sage! How did this golden team (all with diverse backgrounds) come together to create such an amazing product?

Well living together helps; but basically I was serving the Golden Lattes at my cafe in Belgrave, Renny had the idea to package the goods and on sell, and Sage’s brilliant brain has helped bring it all to life.

The craziest moment in the making of GG was..?

Probably the first few sales we made and walking into our favourite cafes, to see they are stocking our product! Still makes us smile every time.

Can you tell us about the nutritional benefits of GG and how it can help with ‘gut health’?

Collectively the four spices blended in Golden Grind have an abundance of proven health benefits. The main two of which include the strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric. Turmeric has also been shown to aid with digestion and assist the gut with processing food whilst working to combat inflammation in the lining of the stomach. It’s also a great antimicrobial. Ginger is a strong immunity booster, cinnamon can help lower blood sugar levels, and black pepper helps with the absorption of the turmeric into the blood stream, making it more readily available for use throughout the body.

What was the scariest or most challenging part of starting GG and how did you overcame it?

The most challenging part is probably juggling our 9-5 jobs and then working outside business hours to make Golden Grind happen. We were so blessed that GG took off right from the get go, although on the flipside we have been super busy since. As we maintain (and love) our current employment positions, everything golden has to happen late at night and on the weekends.

The most golden lattes you have drunk in a day is..?

We all drink around 3-4 a day on average (addicted). On ‘taste-testing day’ (for new blends) we have up to 10 cups each!

What do you do ‘to be happy’?

Spending time with our dogs. Ren and I have two whippets and Sage has a Staffy.

What’s next for the GG team? Do you have plans to branch out the range?

We certainly do! We are keeping this close guarded, but it will definitely be products that focus on celebrating turmeric. We are really excited about what’s to come.
